Crushing Cones was written to give you an insight into what to expect if you choose to become a professional driver. During the course of training you will crush a lot of cones as you become skilled at avoiding fixed objects! I regret the number of cones that were sacrificed as I learned to back a tractor-trailer combination in a straight line, parallel park with only ten feet to spare, and put the entire rig into an imaginary dock at a 90 degree angle. The cones were my silent guides and suffered the indignity of being flattened as I learned. For this reason I have a renewed respect for the plastic orange devices and I will strive to leave them alone from this day forward... Ellen Voie Ellen C. Voie is like many of us. She enjoys transportation to the point that she felt something was missing. Something like a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). Her recent publication, Crushing Cones, is not only an inspiration for those men and women that would like to get into trucking, but a fascinating recap of her story of becoming a professional truck driver that would be enjoyed by the seasoned professional. Safe travels... Kevin W. Burch, Chairman, Truckload Carriers Association President, Jet Express, Inc. ... and a CDL holder as of 2008! At Cuyahoga Community College we consider our cones as part of the training family. Ellen was hard on a few, but we all give part of ourselves to make a difference for others. Ellen has accomplished so many things in her career and personal life! My challenge to her as President of Women in Trucking was to obtain a Class “A” CDL. Ellen accepted the challenge and was successful -- training during a cold December in Cleveland. Her accounts are full of the reality of CDL training. Her research and information on how to choose a school and how to obtain funding are just what the new student needs. The other information she has included will help everyone prepare for the industry. Funny, informative and a good read, this account of the training and the information Ellen gives will be good for the student and the experienced driver. Ellen’s wit and dedication to the needs of all drivers is a shining example to everyone in the business. Fly High, Drive Right, Be SAFE! Kreigh A.
