Thanks Laurie,

NC does offer a CDL learners permit. I have downloaded the CDL manual and am studying it. There is a school at the local community college but it's a bit out of my price range. I have an old outstanding student loan, so won't qualify for financial aid.

I have thought about class B, and may just follow you advice. Then I can get on the road and earn while I'm working on the A.

On the other topic, you may have to unsub and resub. At least it's not your whole name!

Hi Laurie,

Another horsewoman here . . . If you can handle TB broodmares (%$#%&&!), you can handle anything!

As to your name, log in, click on profile and change your username to horse hauler.

Good luck with your change. I'm sure you'll do fine!

Hi Ladies,

I just got back from a trip from Tucson to Boone, NC. I was driving a straight International 4300 series and pulling a car hauler behind. I LOVED it! I was a little intimidated at first but quickly got the hang of things. The trip wasn't a piece of cake by any means. It was hard work! (Yes, I survived I-85 west of ATL . . . Now I know why some truckers cuss!) Since I was on my own, I made some side trips and was off the Interstate for a couple of days. All told, I spent about 50 hours in that truck. I hated to turn it in!

I enjoyed the trip so much that now I'd like to drive commercially. I am mid-life (47) single Mom and Grandma, able to spend days/weeks away from home, but my former "career" was homemaker (Kids are grown now). True, I've held lots of part-time jobs and had full time work that lasted a year or so, but no long-term employment. Is this going to hurt me in my search for driving employment?

My next question is, should I go ahead and get the CDL learners permit, then find a company to train me?

I am in Western NC, very close to Hickory and Wilkesboro. So . . . what companies should I approach first and how do I go about it?

What do you think of Con-way?

And finally, could I co-drive with a learners permit, and learn from a partner? An immediate paycheck (however small) would be a HUGE plus!

Thanks much, and I have enjoyed reading the forum!
