I'm in the states, Kentucky actually.
I am eligible for paid tuition under something called the Workforce Initiative Act. This is a program that allows adults to go to school and get retrained for “high demand” jobs. My decision to go into trucking was based on the length of school and the average starting pay. The local work center was able to show me the approved programs, schools, and even the salaries for the positions that are covered by the government. After much thought and discussion with my husband I knew that driving was the right path for me. Of course I don’t start school until Monday and I may sing a different tune after that…..
I was very excited to see that something like Women in Trucking existed and spent most of yesterday reading the threads. I actually printed off the application and put it in the mail.
I am making a very big career switch, going from over 15 years in the insurance-healthcare industry to trucking. I realize that sitting in a cubicle will be vastly different from getting behind the wheel of a big rig. I do have a few trucker friends that are giving me advice and have offered to be points of reference when I actually get driving.
I just felt the need to say thanks to all of you women that have paved the way for people like me and for taking the time to give honest and thoughtful insight on this forum.
