To be honest, I'm in the same boat. Ready to start a bigger and better career in the transportation industry with a 14 and 16 year old at home. I have had this mental battle with myself for a while now and the conclusion I have come to is this... I can wait a few more years if it means giving my kids what they need now. If this was a financial issue it probably would have been a harder decision but it is not at this point in time. I guess I personally am not willing to risk loosing the connection I have with my kids just for the sake of my own desire. The jobs I am after will still be there when the kids go off to college and I will sleep better at night until then knowing I have not compromised the well being of my kids. I also understand that many families live very happily in the situation you are considering because they make it work. I am in no way criticizing these families...I think it takes a lot of dedication and I think they should be commended! My husband also works over the road and is usually gone for 10 days at a time. I understand your feelings but our day will come and for now it just gives me something to look forward to.
This is my reality check...good luck with yours!

My name is Cathy and I am the DOT Compliance Manager for an underground cable construction company in Wisconsin. We are a private carrier with approx. 120 drivers and 200 trucks, 50 trailers...
I started working for this company as a receptionist and fell into this position 3 months after I was hired. 6 Years later I am loving it! I am the only DOT person in our business so I have my work cut out for me. I have definitely found my ideal career. Unfortunately I would like to do it for someone other than my current employer. If anyone knows of any openings in the Wisconsin area let me know! I am about 1 1/2 hours east of the Twin Cities.
I would encourage anyone interested in this field to at least give it a try. I find it very empowering!
