I sure hope that you didn't go to Stevens. Well, they are a good school for learning to drive, but they will bleed you dry... I went to school in Dec of 05. you have to pay back for the hotel, your bus/plane ride, any loadlocks you buy, anything you buy will be taken out of your paycheck. the pay scale for new drivers is .26/mile. and please don't do the fleece program. You are making the truck payment for them and you don't get to keep the truck.. I have heard that they have changed some policies regarding safety so that is good..
but if you go through Stevens, make sure you finish your time with them because if you leave even one day early before the contract expires, then you have to pay the full price of the tuition... if you want to know more just let me know at clsmith3345@hotmail.com.
I had to go to Target to get a good pair of snow boots...I was just looking for the name on the boot..but anyways, these are good for being in the snow. your feet don't get wet and they stay reasonably warm. had to buy them for the year that we had to chain up a lot. They also have this product (not sure if it's in Target or not), that you slip over whatever shoes you have on, that helps you walk on the ice without busting your but. because we all know that truck stops don't scrape their parking lots. I will try and find the name of the boots that I have.
I also agree with GreenPete about the gloves. Something that keeps your hands warm but you can grasp with as well.
if you buy a road atlas from a truck stop. they have all the clearance, restrictions, weight combinations, weigh stations.. Also, buy the laminated version, it will last a lot longer. as far as height changing due to paving, I believe they have phone numbers in the front of book where you can call to find out weather, construction, etc. It's a good investment.
mine says Rand McNally Deluxe Motor Carriers' Road Atlas. it includes maps for US, Canada and Mexico..
We haul reefer loads and we have used brooms before but they are a pain... So we bought a small leaf gas blower that fits under the bunk... We paid about 60-70 bucks... sometimes it's a little tricky to get started... you have to pay more for the ones that aren't tricky.. lol...
but anyways, it takes about 5 min to clean our trailer.. if you can afford.. I would recommend it. saves time and sore muscles.
newbie to the forums as well.... been hearing about WIT a long time and wouldn't mind talking with or meeting other women truckers out there...
as for more user name... my husband calls me that he begins with "Baby can.... u get me a .. fill in blank...LOL... So I call him "Honey do"
I am a team driver. We work for Trailiner out of Springfield, MO.. They are almost a medium sized company... Maybe 10 dispatchers... the pay isn't great, nor the benefits but they keep us rolling...sometimes we have had to sit but we make it up in the end... so no worries. We travel with our Pug Joplin and she hates it when we get out of the truck without her... God, she makes a fuss... We are also part of Covenant Motorcycle Ministries out of Joplin. I also post on truckerspace.com (mahlonstopit.username) .. truckerstruckingforum.com (covenanbiker) ...
Anyways, Hi to everyone... will be heading to Carlisle, PA in the am... we deliver on Sat..so hopefully we get out the east before the next snow storm hits...
