I so applaud your labor. I am a 33 yr veteran woman driver. I started hauling logs in Washington State in 1977.
I had not heard of this lady driver, Luella Bates until now. I will enjoy hearing more about her.
After 15 years of OTR, I have retired. I miss it alot, but I keep busy writing books and screen plays.

And where do the truckstops find these awful shower heads? I think Niagra Falls would be kinder to us then the many many heads I have used.

Yes, sounds like you need to be careful with Flick. Rocket won't leave my side, ever, so I am grateful for that.
As far as the casinos are concerned, I very often use them as my safe place to park. Most have camears all over the grounds along with security that constantly drive the parking area of the big trucks. Some even write down the truck plates and have a description of the drivers. Many have full facilities for drivers, showers, phones, fuel, driver lounge etc. Along with good restaurants often times. They truely are my choice in parking if a terminal of ours is not available. I would recommend this to all female drivers.

Thank-you. Yes I was blessed to be abole to be with my husband right thru the end. I also travel for a living and as a married team driver for so many years I really had no idea of the possible dangers., I have really learned over the years to stay safe and enjoy my job. Even tho alone. I have my dog Rocket, and we BBQ across America. He loves it when I get the BBQ out and can barley contain himself.
I also have my ring that I wear and that does assist me in several situations.

Ladies,
Thank-you for your stories. I think this will be a great way for some of us to get things off our chest, along with giving vital info to other females in the industry.
I too have become a confirmen single gal, and have made serious arraingments to live the Golden Girl life in Florida with friends as we get closer to retirement.
I am a widow, my husband dying in our truck (behind the wheel) just after we did a shift change. Having been married most of my life, I was naturally thrown into a state of confusion. As time went on I felt it was important to find another mate and partner so I allowed people into my life (foolishly) that has created the end result of today. I too have been called several things. Man hater, Runner, and more.
This has resulted in my writing a book called "No Ring" True stories about life on the road for a single woman.........
At anyrate, IT IS WHAT IT IS......P

I can believe that story with you and Sharkey........So sorry he is not with you anymore.
I have become a bit of a fear freak about my Rocket and choose not to shower at the truck stops very often . I have been hearing about too many trucks being stolen while the drivers are in showering (Latest one I heard was a truck stop in VA beach) Anyways, I would be suicidal if that happened to me and my Rocket, so I choose to use facilities at the casinos and my different company terminals across the country......

This will be hard to believe but,
A few days ago I got the 12 volt oven out and put my chicken and pototoes in side, with thoughts of a great dinner to be. I know Rocket also had the same thoughts as I could see it in his eyes. We share everything including meals (well he still gets his dog food, then thinks he needs some of mine too) anyways, I was drivin along with no cares to bother me when all of a sudden Rocket came forward and put his front feet on my throttle leg., Hmmm I said, "What's up Rocket???You never come forward unless you need a pottybreak, water, food etc. all of which has been taken care of. What in the world is the problem"? Well, he was persistant and would not stop bothering me untill I pulled the truck over. As I got up from my seat to head for the sleeper where he now stood guard, I saw that the red light on the oven was not lite up. It had blown a fuse. Rocket was letting me know that dinner was in trouble.
I think he was able to hear the fuse blow, or he may be able to hear the oven when it is cooking and understands that the goodstuff inside was not going to get cooked and on the table for him and I..
What do you readers think?

That wasn't intended for you. The soap Opera was the gal complianing to the Pilot Manager.
Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was just not believn what I was readin.
Newby's due tend to carry on. I know I did. Oh ya. But like the rest, I figured it out. I also remember showering in mens showers cause that was all they had at many of the truckstops.

Ladies,
Ok, I will start it. Dating on the road.
1st question)
If we like each others company, and work for different carriers, how in the world will we manage to see each other?
Most responses I get is that some other guy will slip in there and we will be finished. It is very hard on these guys, knowing that their "girl" is out there.
Then there is the cell phone romance:
This means that the phone will be tied up constantly because they "Need to know". Everything
This can work both ways. Girls, be careful about giving out your numbers.
The E-mail romance. Well, what can I say. I experienced that for about 6 months before I was privy to some of his real thoughts. Another man done gone.
Hope some of you can feel free to tell your stories. Nothing real dramatic, as there is not enough space I am sure.
And lets have some great stories with great endings if you have any.
Be safe out there

Desiree,
Glad to hear from you. My Book,Hmmmm, well it will be interesting. I plan to add several chapters that tell the stories of other Lady Truckers along with my story. So, if your are at a truckstop and hear someone ask the female drivers for some input, it might be me.
I also plan a chapter that is totally male dominated. I want the hard questions asked and answered, if they dare speak the truth. Not tough questions mind you. Easy ones....Like, what do you think of females in trucking, that sort of thing. I know there are alot of guys who enjoy the fact that we are out here, but also those that do not.
I have been keeping a diary for years and will edit those. Some pretty cool stuff and heart breaking too. Of which we can all relate.
I started my driving career as a log truck driver in the Northwest. Tough job but loved it.
Just a tidbit for ya. Book is called "No Ring". Not anything like you would expect it to mean. Not at all.......

Just FYI for all drivers with pets on board. Please, lock your truck when you pull forward at the fuel islands. I have heard too many stories about pets being stolen from the truck while the driver was inside getting fuel reciepts and other items. What an terrible experience that would be.

Updates from Women In Trucking President » What's your opinion? Jul 19, 2009 07:33 AM (Total replies: 14)

Lets face it ladies, driving for any company has it's pros and cons. Working for a company that advertises for woman and minorities can be good and bad. The experiences that some has been witness to are a good indicator of the job. I personally think that if you are over the road, go with a large company. They generally have company policies in effect that help us.
It ain't easy bein us

Drivers, lets hear from you regarding your special partners. Your pets.
I raised my black Schnauzer in my semi. Then lost him at 13 yrs old. I now have my little rocket. He is a Pomeranian with a hair cut. (Looks like a fox) He is my reason for everything I do. The life line for me.
Hope to hear from more drivers with pet stories
Be safe

Bobbi
