Judging from the terms of your contract I know who you are leased to...also keep in mind that you receive 67% of 98% because they take 2 % off the top. I jokingly refer to this as signage fee. NEVER should anyone receive any part of FUEL SURCHARGE that does not pay for the fuel. PERIOD. Now, that being said...the troubling thing about the bill is that unless brokers are forced to list the total compensation breakdown of the load, the money they lose from not being able to take any part of fsc will be taken out somewhere else. The only TRUE way to insure that owners are compensated for their costs is for people to stop hauling CHEAP FREIGHT. I will call brokers daily, and I get rates offered often at less than 1$ a mile. I ask them....who hauls this stuff for you and am frequently told that people who ran a good load in and just want fuel money to get out again. That is absolutely the root of the problem. If everyone would just STOP hauling the cheap freight, the freight proces would come up. Belive me, there are many freight brokers out there that pay premium rates, even in areas that are known for lousy rates....

YOu cannot train a dispatcher. All you can do is find someone that moves you like you want. A suggestion.....move to a smaller company that gives you personal attention. We run 16 trucks...5 of them semi-trucks. We are leased on with a large carrier..BUT...I am their fleet manager. It works wonderfully because when our carrier cannot get them loads, I find them loads. The backhauls I find usually pay the drivers as much or more than what most carriers pay them regularly (.42-.62 a mile) and our heahaul loads are .62 a mile to the drivers. It works well.

Try driving expedited.......bigger sleepers usually 84-96 inch sleepers with a 22 ft box. We pay our teams .52 a mile to start and most of our teams take home anywhere from 1800-3000 a week. Many of our teams are husband/wives who9 wanted to go out on road together but one or the other has no experience or is not comfortable in a big rig.

Ellen,
I cannot think of a "chain" that is specifically female friendly except "Little America". These are pretty amazing truckstops. Problem is there are so few of them. Jubitz in Portland, OR is also female friendly. TA-Pilot-Love's- FlyingJ- are all pretty much the same--necessary evils. I usually recommend Pilot or J's and TA's are very "manager dependent" ( a good manager--good TA problem is most are mediocre at best.) Love's is the place I tell my drivers to avoid...they are usually the dirtiest and worst.

Cleaner showers, more female friendly products......personally I hate NASCAR......feminine product dispensers in restrooms for emergencies....2 towels in showers because long hair takes 2 .......less carbohydrate fat filled menus and more flavor and fit meals.....fresh food......smaller portions.......variety....I hate to see the same menu for 3 months at each place.......less "fast" food and more "fresh" food....ie....chipotle's instead of taco bell....postage stamps and mail boxes......reading rooms with comfortable chairs, no loud tv, and not fluorescent lighting......laundry rooms with working dryers.......

Expediting IS otr....just another form. I think that driving bus is quite easy to get into...especially if you start off doing school bus driving. As far as door to door delivery for fed-ex or ups....I could not really say as that is not considered expediting but rather local delivery.

We travel with 2 Siberian Huskies in our truck.....would not leave home without them. Pets make your life on the road much healthier than going it alone...just make certain her shots are up to date and you carry shot records with you. Most Petsmarts have a vet as long as you have shot records if you ever need to take her anywhere. My dogs can pick there truck out of a crowded lot and run to jump in....it is their home also.

Grandma,
If you want to get started in trucking I would do 2 things....First I would fond someone that would want to run team with me as the Hours of Service have really messed with the earning potential of solo drivers.
I would then start with my class B cdl. You do not need to go to school for this. You can study and get permit, then practice with someone that has a cdl (class b or higher with air brakes). MY drivers with class b cdls make more per mile than most drivers with class a, and they are otr all 48 states and canada. To take your driving test you can rent a truck from Ryder that has a gvw (gross vehicle weight or how much can vehicle weigh loaded) of 33,000 lbs with air brakes. These are usually bobtails or van trucks (16-22 foot box) andnp trailer. It is much easier to drive one of these and the trucks are like traveling in an rv and getting paid to see the country. After you got your class b cdl I would contact an expedited freight company like Fed-ex, Panther, Express 1 , Tri-State, etc.
