I know i listed what I carry in my tool kit , but in all honesty I don't believe that there is anything "special" about my tools as compared to a guys kit . I probably carry more tools than they do , since they are usually borrowing mine to fix their trucks .

I carry an assortment of sockets with ratchet and extensions (4 different lengths) , pliers (needle nose , channel locks , and locking ), a combination phillips/straight blade screwdriver , Crescent wrenches (large and medium size), hammer , zip ties , and a 3 foot piece of rebar (1" thick) for removing rocks from between my drives . I am also going to be adding a wire stripping tool soon along with the wire clamps to make a quick connection if needed . I also have a utility blade lock back knife for those times i have to put a hole in a mudflap so i can hang it out of the way .

As the economy worsens we will see more of this type of crime Ellen . It is absolutely amazing to me that they would find somewhere to unload all of this cargo and sell it . Where would they sell it ? Flea markets ? Surely not Pawn shops . I mean , how many people would have a need for reams and reams of paper ? Recliners yes , but it boggles my mind to think of how they would manage to get rid of them .

Kreigh , I was curious . Do schools do background checks on prospective students to be sure they aren't wasting their money due to possible traffic violations or some criminal charges in their past ?

Holy cow ! Things like this really concern me hellion . He could be the next one I see at the bottom of the mountain , the hard way . I have to agree hon , there really needs to be some sort of monitoring/mentoring system in place .

I could imagine what would happen if they did this to triaxle drivers as I work with guys that can't even lift as much as i can .There isn't a thing wrong with their driving skills though .

General Discussion » perpetual victims Dec 30, 2009 06:44 AM (Total replies: 3)

Once again , very good post . I am sure we all have things that have happened in our past that were damaging to our psyches or our persons . I have been a victim , but worked through it and became a survivor as i refuse to lie down and moan and groan and beat my breast about the wrongs done to me . Do I share a blame in them ? Most certainly . Do I let them control me ? Absolutely not! Some people refuse to have the courage to face the damage head on , I don't ridicule these people , although I feel sorrow for them as they are damaged and refuse to heal .
I used to think that in order to heal from my abuses I should forgive that other person and not be angry at what had been done to me . It took me 20 some years to realize that it was OK to be angry about what had happened to me , and it also took that long to realize that some of the things that happened I DID have control over and that I share some of the responsibilty for allowing the abuse in the first place .
Once you leave victimhood behind you can become so much stronger .

My trainer and my boss both called it an "in trip walkaround" DMLA . They both prodded me to do this every day while training and afterwards it is now just habit with me . I often watch when the other drivers come in and go to their trucks in the morning , just to see if they do the same thing , and I have noticed that there aren't many that do . I figure if I do my regular pre and post trip inspections , plus my in trip walkaround then when something happens to my truck and the boss says "did you do your pretrip this morning ? check the antifreeze ? oil ? Springs , etc" I can say yes i did and everything was fine when i left . I don't know how he does it but lord is that man scary , he can tell if a driver is lying when he asks those questions , just by the answers he gets .

I have been reading the same things kreigh and I want to thank you for taking the time to sort that out for us on here . There are so many misconceptions and confusion and half truths for students and the general public to see and misunderstand . It's also good to know that the gov't funding is going to be under better scrutiny , that way there is a guarantee of a return on the money being spent instead of that money being wasted .
Once again Kreigh , thank you for the information .

I have been driving dump truck now for 3 years , soon to be 4 and one question I
have heard way too often from new drivers starting at my company is " But why
can't I cross that low weight limit bridge ? I'll only be on it for a few
seconds." It only takes a second for that antique bridge to finally give out and
that may be the second you happen to be on it .
I have an article I would like to share , it comes from a local newspaper and we
had it posted on our bulletin board at work as a type of teaching tool.

"COUNTY FILES LAWSUIT OVER BRIDGE COLLAPSE"
Waynesburg,PA- Greene county has sued a smithfield trucking company AND THE
DRIVER who drove a heavy load across a county bridge in Morris township last
year , causing the bridge to collapse .
The lawsuit filed last thursday with the Greene county court names both trucking
company and driver as defendants. The lawsuit asks for $1,190,000. to replace the
50 foot long bridge .
On April 17,2008, the driver was driving a 1991 International triaxle owned by
xxxxxxx trucking on simpsons chapel road, delivering a load of stone to the CNX
gas site in Morris township .
As the truck crossed the 116 year old bridge , the bridge superstructure
collapsed and it's abuttments were severely damaged or destroyed , the suit said
.
The driver (even tho he is named in the paper , I will leave him nameless here)
drove across the bridge , even though it was clearly posted with a 3 ton weight
limit . The defendants truck , which was weighed after he had picked up stone at
a local quarry , weighed 36.39 tons . (Now , I don't know if that is actual
total weight , or if they were going by his actual load weight . )
The suit claims the bridge cannot be repaired and will have to be replaced .The
county also claims that the bridge cannot be replaced until damages are
recovered . End of article.

Now I want to make a few comments here on this whole story , for starters , this
route he took was considered a shortcut , it was not the only way into the job
site . By ignoring the designated route given to him by the quarry he took
responsibility for his own actions . Nowhere in this article was it mentioned
that the quarry would be held liable for overloading , as it is the job of the
driver to make sure he is not overloaded .I also know from seeing pictures
posted last year in the paper that he was nearly home free when the bridge
collapsed . In the pics it showed his front wheels were hanging from the far end
of the bridge and the rest of the truck was about 25 feet down in the creek .
Now it didn't say that there were three other trucks from the same company who
had crossed that bridge right in front of this driver that was on the bridge
when it collapsed , but there were , and they were just darn lucky .
I also noted in the article that the county was suing the trucking company , but
in all actuality , if they have a decent attorney they won't have to pay a dime
. It is a very real possibility that they will leave the driver holding the bag
and refuse all responsibility for the drivers actions . To be perfectly honest
here , I would never expect my company to be responsible for my carelessness ,
and they wouldn't expect to be held responsible either .
So, as i have replied many times to the newbies that start at our company , If
it is posted under your gross weight then DO NOT CROSS IT !I tell them if they
are sent on a delivery and it is a posted bridge or road then stop before going
onto it and call the quarry , although that doesn't absolve the driver of blame
if they continue on across that low weight bridge or road . I simply call the
quarry and ask them to call the customer and let them know about the weight
limit and then as I am captain of my own ship , I make the decision to take the
risk or not .I also tell the new guys , when they give me the look that says
"I'm not a kid" that they are adults and can make their own decisions but if it
were me I would be covering ALL my bases and my butt while I am at it .
I won't lie to ya , I have taken loads back because there was no other way to
get in to the job . I don't like to but sometimes you have to . Yes , I am sure
another company got to haul that load in and another driver made money on that
load ,but every time i have done so I called first and told the quarry why i was
, and then i called my boss and told him also .My boss always tells me that I
made the right choice as he would be really ticked if he had to pay a $10,000
tow bill and then would have to fire me .
My first year I endagered my truck , myself , and my job by going across an old
concrete and steel affair that was just as long as my truck and I can tell you
that i have never done it since then . I just got lucky , and I don't count on
that any more as luck has a way of running out when you need it most .

Dawdles , You hit the nail on the head a few times when you said PROFESSIONALLY handled . There are too many people who come into this industry thinking that because it is considered an unskilled position that it is going to be all fun and games and anything goes . I hear it every day out there on the radio , and have even experienced it a time or two myself .
This job is not a game , it truly is a profession , just the same as being a doctor or a lawyer . No , we don't have to go thru years of college to be truck drivers but for goodness sake , people need to take pride in what they do and the image they present out here to the whole world .
I am in agreement with this ladies , dawdles hit it right on . Clear cut boundaries , definitive guidelines , and proper reporting procedures need to be put in palce . Too much murky water the way it is now .
