LG- IMO, you hit the nail on the head and I agree with you. Great point about Arnold S.

Wow! What a good idea. I have never heard of this before; what a great invention. Thank you for telling me about it.

Hmmm- Thank you very much for the tip.

Yes, we have come across some gross hotels. Often, if a hotel offers truck parking, I always ask to see the room first now.

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I appreciate you.

I like all of those movies too.

Another good one is 'Because of Winn Dixie' and 'Secondhand Lions'

Loved them both.

LG- Thank you for looking up these articles. I appreciate your time, effort, and keeping me informed.

This scares me. I am all for safety. I don't want to be hit by an 18 wheeler, or any vehicle for that matter, any more than anyone else. However, where does it all end?

I feel like trucks and drivers are targeted (IMO), and it seems someone is always going over us and the industry with a fine tooth comb.

Will this eventually get to 'Well, you are too old to drive. Studies show old people fall asleep sitting up.' Is an 18 wheeler more dangerous than a poor driver in a car? Is an 18 worse than a driver in a car with medical issues? The driver of the car could cause a major pile-up by falling asleep or blacking out. What about a stressed driver? I have heard of one driver getting so stressed he purposely hit and pushed a car that had been tangling with him for quite a ways.

It just seems to me that eventually, who will be left or 'fit' to drive?

As always, only my opinion.

I wanted to stop by and say Welcome. I know of Chiropractors, Accountants and more that have decided to come out on the road. I am so glad to hear that you have decided to join the industry. I look forward to reading many more posts from you.

General Discussion » Driver Retention Jul 20, 2008 06:26 AM (Total replies: 7)

Many years ago, I met a solo driver that only drove 300 miles per day...and not one mile more. I couldn't imagine how anyone could afford to live on what that driver probably made. The driver went on to tell me that he was retired from another profession and had come out on the road just to see the country, but he couldn't afford an R.V. The driver told me that when he had spoken with recruiting that they said his requests would be no problem. However, from what the driver told me his dispacher was less than thrilled. The driver explained to his dispatcher that recruiting had assured him that it would be o.k. This was an accident free driver and a nice guy.

I also know of teams that were very hard runners once, but now due to age or health they simply don't want to run 7,500 miles per week. They are still good, safe drivers, but want the flexibility to only run 5,000 miles per week.

Other professions offer part-time and full-time, so perhaps similar flexibility in the trucking industry might be worth exploring.

Since one company is not the perfect fit for a drivers I found myself thinking about how drivers and companies might be better matched. Perhaps a solo or team could fill out a survey with the recruiting department in the beginning. It could have questions like 'What is the minimum and maximum amount of miles you want per week?' And 'How often do you need to get home?' 'Would you consider regional or local driving?' 'Do you need sick days?', and so on. Then, companies could also list 'We need 7,500 mile per week teams' if that is what they need to make a good match for the company. Perhaps this might allow drivers to be retained...if they know what the company expects up front, and if the company sticks to what they say.

I have spoken with some teams that want as many miles as possible put on them. However, they end up being assigned too few miles at times. Then, drivers that like a more slow pace are assigned the maximum team miles. Then, it ends up with unhappy people and drivers sometimes move on.

Do you think a survey would be a good or bad idea? Do you think it might help driver retention, as long as both parties stuck to what they said? What other questions do you think should be asked?

What is the best idea, product, or booth you have seen at a truck show?

General Discussion » Jokes Jul 20, 2008 05:25 AM (Total replies: 2)

Another trucker told me these jokes. I enjoyed them and wanted to pass them on.

A trucker dies and goes to heaven. At the pearly gates St. Peter gives the trucker a brand new truck with all the chrome any driver could want. The driver pulls off to the side and parks. After 3 days of seeing the trucker sitting there, St. Peter goes to the truck and asks the driver why he wasn't out driving around heaven. The trucker said he was still waiting on a load assignment. St. Peter replied 'Well, you will be waiting a while longer because we still haven't had any dispatchers make it here.' :)

3 truckers are walking through a truck stop parking lot. One driver finds a bottle and rubs the dirt off so he can read the label. A geenie pops out. The geenie says I will grant you each one wish. The first driver says 'I wish I was on a tropical island' ....poof the driver is immediately there. The second driver says 'I wish I was at home with my family.' Poof....he is home. The third driver thinks and thinks and finally says ' I can't think of anything to wish for....I sure wish my 2 friends were back here to tell me what to wish for.'

Also keep an eye on permit expiration dates, keep up with laws in many states (mudflap, trailer length can't get off the interstate for more than a certain mileage, checking to make sure a trailer has apportioned license plates, and so on), customer relations, finding or being a lumper, calling for directions, making sure the trailer is not overweight, etc. and this is some truckers daily life. Sometimes it feels like everything falls on the driver's shoulders.

Good post.

I can't remember where I saw it advertised, how much it cost, or the other details, but I saw an advertisement for homesites that include a pad to park an 18 wheeler on. I have noticed a couple of truck stops that no longer allow dropped trailers, so this sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Plus, having a trucker for a neighbor might be a good idea for the loud diesel engine.

If I have a choice between someone flashing the high beams or not flashing at all, I choose not flashing at all. It takes my eyes time to adjust after someone flashes the high beams. I am not really sure why some people choose to do it. I also see some people just ride down the interstate with them on. The bluish colored lights are knd of hard on my eyes too.

Frankenmuth, Michigan is a very cute town. Several of the locals gave us quite a history lesson and we just loved it there.

Advice to New Truck Drivers » drugs/medications Jul 10, 2008 08:21 PM (Total replies: 7)

If the drug name is not listed on the schedules then it is o.k. to take while in a Commercial Motor Vehicle?

If it is listed on the schedules does that mean that you can't take it AT ALL, even on sleeper berth time?

This gets confusing, so I am glad to be having this discussion.

1) A, I

2) D, F, G

3) Mid-America Trucking Show, if I had to pick one. However, because so many drivers seem to request time to go to the trucking shows, I have never been to one.

4) Hotels/Convention Center/Meeting Halls are not a bad idea. However, some hotels that offer truck parking.....well, I wouldn't dare stay in them. If something could be worked out with a nice, clean hotel, where trucks could also park, then I would be more inclined to stay. In my personal experiences, I have been VERY dissatisfied with "trucker" hotels and/or "trucker" rooms.

5) 3-4 days

6) Weekend or Last Part of week

7) A, B, E, F, H, I

8) Drugs/Alcohol, New Items that make the trucker's life easier

9) I would try to attend. However, many drivers request time to go to truck shows, and other trucking events...so it makes it difficult to attend.

Advice to New Truck Drivers » Party Girl Jul 10, 2008 05:54 PM (Total replies: 20)

LGodiva- I have a question in regards to one of your posts here. On (c) (2) (ii), and (c) (2) (iii), I am curious where a driver can find the list of controlled substances (specific names of prescribed drugs/controlled substances).

Also, I am curious if OTC medications are included? I have heard some drivers say that since some roads are very bumpy they have to take an OTC medication that also has a sleep aid in it....are those allowed?

I once brought in prescription bottles to a testing facility when I was called up for a random. I showed it to the lady and she told me she was not allowed to write any of my prescriptions down. She said the only thing a driver could do was contest a result once it came back. That didn't make sense to me. So, I still bring in my prescriptions and show them ahead of time for the test, but have had other testers tell me those prescriptions were fine. So, sadly, all of the testing facilities do not seem to be on the same page.

I have also heard the same thing about the poppy seeds. I wasn't sure how true it was when I heard it. However, since so many people here have also heard of it, it seems to me there might be some truth to it. Wow! Guess everyone has to lay off the poppy seed bagels now.
