Member of the Month

August 2016 • Jill Maschmeier

Jill Maschmeier has been named the August Member of the Month by the Women In Trucking Association. Jill is the Director of Safety Compliance at National Carriers, Inc. in Liberal, Kansas. She is also a WIT Image Team member.

Jill was born and raised in Turpin, Oklahoma on a poor dirt farm. During her career, she worked in several different industries. Each job came to an end as the company either closed its doors or moved to another city. She once again found herself in a situation needing a job with insurance. When she saw the National Carriers opening in compliance at the time, she thought, “I do not have a clue what compliance in trucking means, but let’s give it a try. What can I lose?”

Jill’s journey has taken her from compliance to recruiting to safety and now claims. “I have learned a lot about the industry, but mostly about myself,” she says. “It has taught me how to listen better and have compassion for my fellow man. There is a right way and wrong way to handle people whether it is a claimant, fellow employee, or just a friend that needs a caring ear.”

That compassion was also demonstrated in Jill’s former mentor at National Carriers, Inc., Darrell Kirkwood. Jill recalls his final words of wisdom, “Be kind and fair and, if you will do that, you will be successful. This industry is really about relationships and places. We are family, dysfunctional at times, but still family.”

From her very first day, Jill has found National Carriers, Inc. to be exciting and fun. She enjoys having such a variety of tasks and personalities to deal with each and every day. She says: “The excitement of what is going to happen each day keeps me coming back for more – you lose some, you win some – that’s life.”
