2018 Salute to Women Behind the Wheel Highlights

WIT's annual “Salute to Women Behind the Wheel” recently honored female professional drivers at its 9th annual celebration at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky. These women were honored for their service as pioneers in the trucking industry. The room was brimming with these female CDL holders in their red WIT shirts and the 200 friends and family members cheering them on.

A big highlight of the event was the 2018 Truck Giveaway winner was revealed. Tiffany Hanna, professional driver and trainer at Prime, Inc. is now an owner-operator thanks to WIT and Arrow Truck Sales. Hanna was selected from the applicants who submitted an essay on the importance of attracting more women into the trucking industry. “We are thrilled to hand over the keys to Tiffany, who has been an advocate for women in the trucking industry by mentoring and supporting the women and men at Prime, Inc.," said WIT President/CEO Ellen Voie. "This is truly the chance of a lifetime, thanks to Arrow Truck Sales and their very generous donation,” Hanna even sang the National Anthem acapella to kick-off the celebration.

In addition, Voie reviewed the recent accomplishments of the nonprofit organization which included fulfilling her dream of providing a female truck driver doll, Clare; launching the Women In Trucking Show on SiriusXM; introducing a member-only online community platform, Engage; working with Expediter Services to develop 150 women-owned businesses; and creating a Canadian Image Team. Other recognition programs include the Distinguished Woman in Logistics and the Influential Woman in Trucking.

The celebration also included music by Jayne Denham, an award-winning singer and song writer from Australia who rocked the house with her high-energy performance. The crowd enjoyed dark and milk chocolate fountains and a huge truck-shaped cake. The female drivers won door prizes and the Women In Trucking Scholarship foundation gave away numerous prizes as well while raising money from the attendees. The event included the annual group photo of the women in their WIT red t-shirts and ended with the distribution of goodie bags filled with items from the event sponsors.

Landstar won the Driver Participation award for having the most female professional drivers present at the event.

Next year’s Salute to Women Behind the Wheel will be held March 30. All female professional drivers are welcome to participate and need not be members of the association.
