By the end of next year, the driver shortage in the trucking industry is estimated to reach 175,000 due to the retirement tsunami of Boomers or Gen Xers, along with such industry developments as Yellow shutting down its operations. Companies with for-hire or private fleets will be in serious peril unless they refine their driver recruiting strategies that work in a highly competitive environment. That’s why it’s important to put a personal touch on recruiting into what has become a more impersonal process.

Head of Industry Relations Marilyn Surber joined Tenstreet in 2019. Surber has been a part of the transportation industry since 2008. She is passionate about serving the transportation industry and is an advocate for transportation community. She has over 15 years’ experience in corporate communication, recruiting, safety and driver training. Prior to joining Tenstreet, Surber served in a number of roles with Melton Truck Lines and Hilti, Inc.
Surber holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication from The University of Tulsa. She served on the Board of Directors for the Commercial Vehicle Training Association, where she was named Member of the Year in 2019 and was selected by Oklahoma Magazine as a Top 40 under 40 for the state of Oklahoma in 2019. Surber is an active member of American Trucking Association, Truckload Carriers Association, Commercial Vehicle Training Association and the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools and numerous state trucking Associations. In addition, Surber serves on the Women In Motion Advisory Board for ATA and the North Carolina Trucking Association Women In Trucking Advisory Board.

Laura Duryea entered the transportation industry as a professional driver in 1993 after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA in Viola Performance. Over the span of her career, she ran a fishing lake and campground, drove for a total of 25 years and teamed for 11 of those years, owned an organic farm for 15 years, was secretary and bingo manager for the Dover Township Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years, was named as a member of the Women of Trucking Advisory Board, is a mentor in ATA’s Women in Motion program, belongs to the Savannah Professional Women for Good, and serves on the Events Committee for the First City Pride Center in Savannah.
Now the Director of Driver Recruitment and Professional Growth at Boyle Transportation, her goal is to build the happiest fleet of drivers in the Industry and to help individuals to be empowered to reach their goals.
