The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has joined a broad coalition of national transportation, infrastructure, business and labor organizations in urging Congress to act promptly to ensure uninterrupted federal funding for surface transportation programs.
Consistent, reliable investment in the nation's transportation network supports safer highways, stronger freight movement, and the long-term planning needed by carriers, shippers, infrastructure partners and the professional drivers who keep America's economy moving. WIT encourages timely congressional action that provides funding certainty and supports a safe, efficient, and resilient transportation system.
Federal surface transportation investment benefits every American daily. The undersigned organizations recognize the importance of Congress acting promptly to avoid a lapse in federal funding and maintain continuity for federal transportation programs and projects.
At the same time, any short-term government funding measure should preserve the total FY 2026 enacted funding levels, regardless of previous funding source, for these critical programs. This would allow long-overdue transportation improvements to continue without interruption, while work on FY 2027 appropriations and a multi-year surface transportation reauthorization continues.
Any policy or funding modifications to the surface transportation programs — even if temporary — would inject uncertainty into state and local planning efforts, which can jeopardize safety and mobility improvements and create downstream impacts across the economy.
This potential funding reduction underscores the urgency of completing a long-term surface transportation reauthorization. We urge House leaders to bring the bipartisan BUILD America 250 Act to the floor and pass it as soon as possible. The legislation would provide states and local transportation agencies with the predictable, multi-year federal investment needed to plan and deliver critical projects.
As bicameral discussions ensue on a continuing resolution, we urge lawmakers to preserve transportation investment and avoid unnecessary disruptions to ongoing projects. Congress should act before current funding expires and pass the BUILD America 250 Act. However, if a short-term funding measure is necessary, Congress should use the additional time it provides to complete action on the legislation and provide the long-term certainty states, localities, contractors, workers, and communities need.
