Sanchez Altamirano gives back through WIT, volunteering as a mentor and ambassador, sharing what she has learned with new and aspiring drivers. She enjoys answering questions, encouraging women to believe in themselves and showing that a career in trucking can be within reach.
Her path to WIT began with a desire to find a community that shared her belief in encouraging and empowering women in the industry. After discovering how rewarding mentoring could be through her role at Walmart, volunteering with WIT gave her another way to help others pursue their goals.
Sanchez Altamirano’s own experiences have also given her a particular perspective on the challenges some women may encounter. She began her career with limited English, and today, as a bilingual driver, she makes a point of encouraging Spanish-speaking women who may view language or cultural differences as barriers to entering the industry.
“I hope my story shows others that anything is possible with determination and hard work. If my journey encourages even one woman to believe in herself, apply for a new opportunity, or chase a dream she thought was out of reach, then I feel I’ve made a difference,” she says.
That desire to help others extends beyond her work in trucking. During tax season, Sanchez Altamirano volunteers as a translator, helping low-income families complete their tax returns.
In her professional role at Walmart, Sanchez Altamirano safely transports freight while also helping new drivers develop their skills and confidence. As a Walmart Ambassador, she works with stores to strengthen communication between transportation and store operations, helping create positive relationships and a better experience for associates and customers.
One of the most meaningful milestones in her career remains becoming a professional driver through the A2D Program. What began as a dream became a reality because she was willing to pursue the opportunity and keep moving forward.
Now, she hopes to do the same for other women. Whether she is mentoring a new driver, supporting a Spanish-speaking woman considering a career in trucking or serving her community, Sanchez Altamirano wants others to recognize that their circumstances do not have to determine how far they can go.
