For-hire and private fleets have a responsibility to ensure that their professional drivers are safe, responsible, drug-free employees on the road as they represent their brand and deliver their freight. The ultimate goal is to keep our roadways – as well as our workforce and valuable assets – as safe as we can. And of course, the expanded and popular use of CBD further complicates things.

This session assembles leading subject matter experts on safety and health challenges involving drug and alcohol use for workforces in the transportation industry. Attend this session to:

  • Better understand the positions of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) on driver use of CBD and other substances
  • Learn practical advice on how professional truck drivers and companies with fleets can remain compliant, avoid fines and, most importantly, staying safe on the roads
  • Understand the DOT oral fluid testing, what has changed in urine testing, and how employers will communicate their choice of urine versus oral fluid testing to the collectors
  • Gain insight into how to manage unintentional violations in a positive and productive manner.

In addition, through evolving efforts by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in streamlining the professional truck driver verification process via the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, it also has inadvertently reduced the pool of qualified drivers—which could shrink further when new requirements take effect Nov. 18. The panel will touch upon this with some brief insights into this constantly-evolving situation.
