Tracks: Operations & Safety, Professional Driver
Professional truck drivers spend an average of 56 minutes a day looking for parking and there’s just one spot for every 11 drivers, according to the ATA. Unfortunately, parking headaches have only become worse with the full enforcement of the electronic logging device mandate, which requires drivers to do all their driving within a 14-hour window. In addition, a lack of parking has been voted a top driver concern for the fourth year in a row, according to the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). The thing is – everyone has talked about these problems for years, so the question becomes: What is the industry doing about it? Gain insights from trucking industry leaders and drivers themselves on actual solutions being presented to address this significant industry challenge. William “Lewie” Pugh
Executive Vice-President
Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA)
Lewie Pugh began his career in trucking as a motor transport operator for the US Army Reserve in 1992. After leaving the military, Pugh joined the commercial trucking ranks as a company driver, but soon bought a truck and made the leap to owner-operator in 1996.
Pugh was leased to several motor carriers over his career, but was most recently leased to Landstar Ranger. In his 13 years with Landstar, he pulled a flatbed trailer, hauling various goods under his company name, Bum Steer Trucking. During this time, Pugh received Landstar’s Star of Quality Award. In his more than 25 years as a successful owner-operator, he accumulated more than one million safe, accident-free miles behind the wheel.
Pugh joined OOIDA in 1996. He was later nominated and elected alternate to the OOIDA Board of Directors in 2004. In 2006, Pugh was seated as a director - a position he holds to this day. In 2017, Pugh (reluctantly) sold his truck and moved from his home state of Ohio to Grain Valley, Missouri, to work fulltime for OOIDA. He was elected Executive Vice-President of the Association in 2018.
Pugh regularly travels to Washington, DC, to meet with lawmakers about issues affecting small business truckers. He attends numerous Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) meetings as an industry representative. In 2020, he testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation. He also serves as the Chairman of the OOIDA Mary Johnston Scholarship Committee. In his free time, Pugh enjoys riding motorcycles, shooting, racing, hunting and fishing.
