Ask Angela: What do you recommend to a woman who is a mother and wants to work in the transportation industry? How did you manage family and job when starting out?

This is a tough one. There never seems to be enough time in the day. Sometimes when there doesn’t seem to be many options - you make things happen. I started my logistics company  as a single mother of 4 boys. This was not easy, but with support from my family, kids and then future husband I kept moving forward.

I tried to always learn while I was working. I’d pack away little bits of knowledge so that eventually I could do tasks faster and better the next time. Eventually, I could do all the elements from planning and carrier negotiations to finances and human relations. It took time, but in time it all came together.

I have an amazing family who saw my potential. My children are now grown and two of them work in the trucking and logistic industry. You have to remember on the days that you are working and not playing, that your child sees your effort and you’re instilling the values of hard work. You should always sneak in kisses, hugs and playtime too. It’s tough, but you can do it.

Best of luck to you,
Angela
