Starting a career in trucking is exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming when you’re trying to get your foot in the door. That’s exactly what Bridgette Johnson, a professional driver from Ohio, shared recently in the Engage forum.

Bridgette introduced herself to the community and opened up about her challenges:

“I want to gain more experience, but my applications are being overlooked. I’d love to learn more about becoming an owner-operator or finding employment. I just need a little push—I truly enjoyed driving and I’m desperately trying to get back to what I love.”

Her message struck a chord—and the WIT community stepped in with encouragement, connections, and practical advice.

Members Lend a Hand

  • A member quickly connected Bridgette to a fellow driver, who offered her personal phone number to for a one-on-one conversation.
  • Alyssa Kirkman, WIT’s Sr. Director of Membership, shared resources like WIT Connections networking groups, upcoming webinars, and even introduced Bridgette to WIT’s Director of Driver Engagement for added support.
  • A networking group leader invited Bridgette to her monthly networking Zoom to connect with other drivers and professionals across the industry.
  • Another member encouraged Bridgette to keep applying, explore apprenticeship programs, and even consider hosting or dock positions to gain experience and build her résumé.

Why It Matters

This exchange is a perfect example of the power of community. Bridgette came to Engage looking for help—and in return, she gained mentors, networking opportunities, and a whole team of supporters cheering her on.

The trucking industry can be tough to navigate, especially for those just starting out. But at WIT, no one has to do it alone. Members share advice, open doors, and remind one another not to give up. Join the conversation on Engage
